Lindsay Lohan spent a night out at the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood on Thursday, just a day after an altercation with her mother, Dina, sent police to the family's Long Island home.
Lohan – who was sporting new dark red hair – made her way into the lobby with three friends just before 10 p.m.
The Liz and Dick actress wore a short, long-sleeved dress then made her way to the patio where she chatted happily with her friends, an onlooker tells PEOPLE.
"Lindsay was very talkative and led much of the conversation," the source adds. "The group shared hot tea and late night salads. Lindsay definitely seemed at ease and in high spirits as they enjoyed a low-key night."
Around 10:40 p.m., Lohan broke from the group to take a phone call. While she appeared immersed in a tense phone conversation, she soon shook it off and returned to enjoying her friends.
"It was clear was making an effort to enjoy herself," the source says.
