Angelina Jolie as Maleficent

The Disney movie Maleficent, a live-action re-telling of the Sleeping Beauty story from the evil queen's point of view, isn't so much a fairy tale as it is a family affair, an insider confirms to PEOPLE.

Besides Angelina Jolie's playing the title role, members of the Jolie-Pitt clan stepped into some of the smaller roles – specifically, Vivienne, 4, as the very young Princess Aurora, and Pax, 8, and Zahara, 7, as walk-on players in the christening scene when the curse is first placed upon the child, says the source.

Filming began in London in June with a cast rounded out by Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, Sam Riley and Elle Fanning as Aurora.

As Jolie, who sports horns, yellowed eyes and blood-red lips for her character, told Entertainment Weekly when the project first made news last April, "I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn't mean she can't have other [warmer] qualities."
