Just before the VMAs on Sunday, MTV premiered the an exclusive clip for Divergent, the Neil Burger-directed adaptation of Veronica Roth's young adult novel, starring Shailene Woodley.

The fast-paced trailer gave fans glimpses of tattoos, death-defying leaps, flying knives and gun-toting soldiers.

As Beatrice "Tris" Prior, the book and film's 16-year-old protagonist and narrator, Woodley lives in a futuristic dystopian Chicago, where society is broken into five factions, each dedicated to a different virtue. Abnegation (where Beatrice was raised) is for the selfless, Dauntless is for the brave, Amity is for the peaceful, Candor is for the honey and Erudite is for the intelligent.

At 16, teenagers must choose where they'll fall based on an aptitude test, sometimes leaving behind their friends and families.

Kate Winslet, Miles Teller, Theo James, Ashley Judd, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer and Zoe Kravitz also star in the film.

After Divergent, Tris's tale continues in Insurgent and will be concluded in Roth's final installment of the series, Allegiant, which will be released in October.

There's plenty of time to choose your faction and read the books. Divergent comes to theaters March 21, 2014. Watch the trailer now:
