While the names of countless Hollywood stars have been bound to the leading roles in the film adaptation of E L James's mega-selling erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey, recent rumors tie two towheaded, younger actors to the project: Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam.
Johnson, 23 – daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith – is a former model who turned heads in The Social Network and the short-lived sitcom Ben and Kate.
Hunnam, 33, is star of the drama Sons of Anarchy, which premieres on FX Sept. 10, as well as this summer's sci-fi film Pacific Rim.
Marquee names ranging from Ryan Gosling to Emma Watson have been linked to the roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. However, sources and studio insiders tell Variety that no casting decisions, including on Hunnam, have been made on the project.
A couple of Grey facts are black-and-white, however: The steamy, bondage trilogy has made its author rich, earning James an estimated $95 million, an amount that puts her at the top of Forbes magazine's list of top-selling authors.
And with Sam Taylor-Johnson in place as director and a slated release date of August 2014, the roles will have to be cast very soon.
