Katy Perry Closes the VMAs with a 'Roar' Under the Brooklyn Bridge

Katy Perry didn't need fireworks to end the VMAs, instead she provided a knock-out.

The singer gave the first live performance of her new single "Roar" under the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday night, on a stage set up like a boxing ring and decorated with a gold lion and a gold tiger head.

Sticking with the theme of her set, Perry dressed like a prizefighter with sparkling gloves, an animal-print sports bra, shorts with a flame print and gold lace-up boots. She even had an actor playing a trainer in her corner of the ring, who handed her a water bottle and offered her a bucket to spit in afterwards. She really showed off her jump-roping skills!

The song is the first track off her new album, Prism (due out Oct. 22), and Perry hinted at some serious reinvention in promo videos that featured her burning the iconic blue wig from her "California Gurls" video and burying her Teenage Dream bubblegum pop image.

Katycats, as the singer's fans are known, eagerly awaited the 28-year-old's performance, Tweeting their excitement as they heard and saw the singer rehearsing in Brooklyn on Saturday.

"Roar" has been a smash hit, selling more than 550,000 digital downloads in its first week of release, which makes it Perry's biggest-selling digital track.
