Soon after their windswept arrival and traditional welcome to New Zealand, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge escaped with Prince George to a luxury retreat to get over their 27-hour flight.

Wharekauhau Lodge and its adjoining guest cottages is about a 90-minute drive from the capital Wellington. It is surrounded by parkland and perched above a spectacular bay.

The couple and some of their staff are believed to have been in a series of cottages which have an "interconnecting" option.

With awful driving rain and wind, they would not have been able to enjoy the full extent of the estate's fine grounds, but they were clearly relaxing.

There's a spa, pool and dining on local produce, such as Sauvignon vine-smoked king salmon and chocolate brownie – which is bound to be a favorite of sweet-toothed William.

A royal source says they were in "good spirits" and had spent most of the first day relaxing.

"They are delighted to be in New Zealand and thoroughly enjoyed the welcome ceremony they received," the source says.

A palace spokesman says in a statement the family had been "staying at a private location at the recommendation of the New Zealand Government, who have secured the accommodation at a substantially reduced rate."

"For the rest of the tour, except for one night, the Duke and Duchess will stay at Government House at the invitation of the Governor General."

They were due to attend an engagement meeting for a selection of new moms and dads at a tea party hosted by the Plunket parenting group on Wednesday.
