If watching Friday’s Hollywood Film Awards wasn’t part of your weekend plans, it should be. Angelina Jolie, Robert Pattinson and Johnny Depp are all expected to attend. Plus, other big-name stars always show up to the event — which kicks off award season — wearing big name designers. And in honor of this year’s show, we’re looking back at the best red carpet moments from 2013.

Loni Venti, Style and Beauty Editor: I’d usually never suggest mixing red and yellow (it tends to remind me of a popular fast-food chain). But when Lupita Nyong’o hit the carpet in this bold J. Mendel gown, the colors looked anything but dollar menu. The saffron-yellow sheath was rich, luxe and daring. And her red-orange lip hue gave the whole look a pop-art vibe. Definitely a stand out moment from last year’s carpet.

Sarah Kinonen, Editorial Assistant: Red carpet vet Sandra Bullock is one star who I constantly look to for LBD inspiration. And the look she chose for last year’s HFAs is no exception. In a DSquared2 black fitted dress with lace detailing and a sweetheart neckline, Bullock stole the show (and left me wishing I could pull off such a simple silhouette as well as she did). She topped the look with a pair of strappy Jimmy Choo sandals, tousled hair and a bold red lip. Gorgeous.

Jackie Fields, Beauty Writer: Usually when I see Julia Roberts grace a carpet, I’m so enthralled by her hair that I don’t see much else, but I’ll always remember the elegant Elie Saab number she wore to the HFAs last year. I love the bell sleeves, and that she chose to go above-the-knee. And let’s be real, she had the best accessories, those being pumps that matched the floral print in her dress and that trophy.

Catherine Kast, Style Writer: As they did all last awards season and continue to do this year, the A-list couple coordinated on the red carpet without being too matchy-matchy, both opting for blacks, grays and whites. Camila’s Max Mara gown with a keyhole neckline and draped neckline epitomized how the black and white trend that we’ve seen on red carpets for the past few seasons should be worn: with minimalist accessories like her Louboutin clutch and Casadei heels. Plus, for Matthew (and really any guy if you ask me), is any suit better than a three-piece suit?

Brittany Talarico, Style News Editor: When I grow up, I want to be Jane Fonda. End of story. The 76-yead-old star always looks amazing on the red carpet and can pull off looks just as well as stars half her age. (Remember this?) So it’s no surprise the star hopped on the jumpsuit bandwagon in this navy, shawl collar Reem Acra design, which she styled with crystal Gala clutch and blinged-out diamond necklace. Please, adopt be Jane.
