Bust out the tissues: The official trailer for The Fault in Our Stars was released Wednesday – and it's a beautiful tearjerker.
Based on the novel by John Green, The Fault in Our Stars follows the budding romance between teens Hazel (Shailene Woodley), who has stage-four cancer, and Gus (Ansel Elgort), whose cancer is in remission.
As Woodley's voice warns in the preview's opening, there's no sugarcoating their story.
Hazel, wearing tubes through her nose in most of the shots, declares herself a "grenade," waiting to explode and harm anyone close to her. She rebuffs Gus's charming advances (including a cheesy-but-cute "Because you're beautiful" line) until a hospital scare forces her to confront her feelings.
"All your efforts to keep me from you are gonna fail," Gus says in one swoon-worthy moment.
Like the book it's based on, The Fault in Our Stars may be a frank depiction of cancer, though it promises to be more about living than dying. The trailer has plenty of upbeat scenes – like one of an awkward hookup, during which Hazel quips, "We are a hot mess."
The Fault in Our Stars opens June 6.
