“We’ve been having fun, creating looks each week that are completely different from the last and so we were definitely in need of a more dramatic cut,” stylist Anita Patrickson tells PEOPLE of the “clean, sleek and fresh” style she chose. “Julianne’s bright blue eyes just lit up when she tried on the dress. We are both massive Pucci fans and so of course this dress was a slam dunk! The back is also fabulous. Business in the front, party in the back!”
Echoes Hough, “I love the sporty essence of this look. The strong lines and bright cobalt blue are all really dramatic elements that we felt would translate well on the show. Its also super sexy and fun from the back! I’ve worn Pucci a number of times to award shows and the cuts are always really beautiful, this dress is no exception!”
Though the gown was an easy sell to the star, Patrickson shares that she never worries about throwing Hough for a loop with an out-there choice. “Julianne is so confident and open that she is the best person to dress. She is willing to try on anything even if it’s just for a laugh,” she says. “She is a fashion adventurer and finds the fun and creativity in the process that I think a lot of people in Hollywood sometimes forget. We put it on, it was very different from some other shapes we’d been wearing and she loved it! The color was definitely a big draw even when it was just on the hanger.”

Patrickson says the key to pulling it all off was keeping the look very simple, and hairstylist Riawna Capri definitely went with the same vibe. “We have been doing a lot of texture and amazing updos, so we wanted to switch it up and go for a clean look,” she said. “At first she was a little nervous it was a little too fierce, so we took a picture to check. And with the simplicity of the dress and the sleek straight hair, on camera the makeup was the perfect amount of edge to tie the entire look together!”
Makeup artist Spencer Barnes brought the most drama to Hough’s outfit with a deep purple lid — a look he calls “sultry cobalt goddess.” He, too, had to convince Hough she could pull it off. “Tonight was a departure from previous weeks looks — the sleek hair coupled with the sultry cobalt eyes gave Julianne the cloak of a vixen,” he says. “She was at first unsure if it was too bold, but then saw the finished look and knew this was a great vibe to embody!”
