"There is going to be one," Reubens told Fallon while coyly confirming movie buzz. "I was hoping I could make this huge announcement tonight, but it's a week away, I think, from being announced."
He continued, saying that production was set to begin in February and that a director was indeed on board, although he wasn't allowed to comment further.
Rumors of a new film have been around for awhile, but so far, the only details confirmed are that Judd Apatow is producing, Reubens and comedian Paul Rust (Arrested Development, Comedy Bang! Bang!) are writing, and, well, that's all we know so far.
The character of Pee-wee Herman developed out of Reubens's early career, which included a stint in improv with the L.A. troupe The Groundlings. An HBO special starring the character was released in 1981, followed by Pee-wee's Big Adventure, the Tim Burton-directed film, in 1985. Pee-wee's Playhouse, the beloved children's show, debuted a year later, while Big Top Pee-wee hit theaters in 1988.
The character's legacy was somewhat diminished after Reubens's 1991 arrest for indecent exposure in an adult theater in Florida – and a guilty plea to possessing obscene material in 2004.
The character didn't appear in public from 1992 until 2007, but was resurrected for a performance on Saturday Night Live in 2011 and an accompanying Broadway show.
