Her pick: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
I'm always reading something that's being turned into a movie. These days that means plenty of young-adult fiction as studios pursue the next hit teen franchise, like Twilight or The Hunger Games . This one's a contender: It's about a futuristic space school where kids prepare to battle aliens. The action and the moral implications are intense – and it might give 15-year-old Asa Butterfield, the star of the film coming in November, a shot at being another Jennifer Lawrence.

Her pick: Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter
Beautiful Ruins is a romantic, funny, page-turner of a novel about both modern-day Hollywood and a struggling young actress in Italy in the 1960s. I'd call it a beach read except it's 40 degrees and raining here in New York City ... the book's taking me away from all that!

Her Pick: The House on Willow Street by Cathy Kelly
Sometimes I review books for the magazine, and I love it: it gives me an excuse to curl up with a novel and tell everyone that mama's "working." Right now my "work" is this story set in an Irish village. My favorite character is a mom of two whose high school boyfriend shows up just as she's separated from her husband. Which of us hasn't wondered about the guy who got away? It's pretty delicious.
