Princess Kate's Perky Pony Is the Perfect Hairstyle for Your Holiday

11/25/2014 at 05:34 PM ET

Kate Beckinsale isn’t the only famous Brit perfecting her ponytail game. Princess Kate stepped out with a pretty, pulled-back style Tuesday while fundraising on behalf of her charity in Norwich, Norfolk, and it’s giving us some Thanksgiving day hair inspiration. (And also getting us psyched for her upcoming visit to the United States.)

Kate skipped her usual blown-out waves for a loose pony with volume in the crown and undone, slightly-messy texture in the back. (Yes, royals can do messy too.)

And we’d like to think the expectant star did this herself (if you look closely, it’s not perfectly even in the front!), because we want to try out a similar style this holiday weekend. So we reached out to celeb hairstylist Sarah Potempa for some tips. Catch her rundown below:

Step 1: Smooth hair and add volume by bending your wrist while using a heated styling tool (Potempa’s Ceramic Styling Iron with blowout attachments is an editor favorite).

Step 2: Section hair from the top of the crown and back brush each section. Make sure to use hairspray to add volume to hair at root.

Step 3: Take hair from the crown and smooth into a ponytail, leaving the sides out.

Step 4: Create side part and brush side pieces over the ponytail. Secure with elastic over the first ponytail, this will keep volume on top while keeping the sides smooth.

Step 5: Spritz with hairspray (Potempa suggests Aussie’s Mega spray) to finish, leaving a long, lasting hold all day.

The Obamas Are Eating More Pie Than You Could Imagine on Thanksgiving

11/27/2014 at 07:30 PM ET

The Taste

Stewart Shining

If your Thanksgiving dinner is lacking in pie, it’s because the Obama family has a monopoly on all the pies in America!

After the First Family chows down on the turkey that was not pardoned for its crime of “having delicious bird parts,” as Last Week Tonight host John Oliver put it, they’re going to have some pretty incredible pastries!

The dessert menu, created by the White House’s first-ever female pastry chef, Susan E. Morrison, sounds incredible.

The President, his wife, Michelle, their daughters, Malia, 16, Sasha, 13, and the rest of their guests will get to choose from banana cream, coconut cream, pumpkin, apple, pecan and cherry pies.

(But really, why choose? Is six slices really too many?)

But will they really have room for pie after a Thanksgiving meal that includes thyme-roasted turkey, honey-baked ham, cornbread stuffing, oyster stuffing, braised winter greens, macaroni and cheese, sweet potato gratin, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and dinner rolls. We hope they’re wearing their comfy pants!

On Wednesday, the President decreed, in the White House’s most baffling holiday tradition, that turkeys Mac and Cheese would be pardoned and, having been spared “from a terrible and delicious fate,” will live out long, healthy lives at Turkey Hill, a farm in Leesburg, Virginia.
