Wildly popular former cast member Bill Hader came back to 30 Rock on Saturday to host Saturday Night Live and, as might have been expected, there was plenty of laughter. How much, exactly?
Let's look at some of the SNL highlights below.
Though the crux of this bit is an extended riff on Hader's singing voice, which feels a little forced, the sequence provides an excuse for his The Skeleton Twins costar Kristen Wiig to pop up and play saxophone, while a seemingly tossed-off reference to Harvey Fierstein prompts the Tony winner himself to crash the stage.
Hader's cantankerous veteran reporter Herb Welch returned Saturday, tossing off bits of old-timey ill will, such as "Don't scat at me, beatnik" and "Stuff a Zagnut in it, sideburns." Silly, but fun.
The Group Hopper was one of the sharpest parodies SNL has turned out in a while, deftly skewering the dystopia-crazed YA novel-adaptation market. Brought to you by "the director of Maze Runner, the producer of Divergent and a casual fan of The Giver, The Group Hopper was a nice showcase for new cast member Pete Davidson and an opportunity for Hader to don Hunger Games-style makeup.
Hader and Wiig introduced a Jan Hooks skit (that also featured the dearly departed Phil Hartman) as a tribute to the late cast member, who died this past week. We'll miss you, Jan.
Stefon came back. Enough said.
