On Tuesday morning, Devin Nottis and at least three other people were allegedly caught on surveillance footage sneaking into the zoo. The group proceeded to steal a female flamingo from her enclosure as part of a scavenger hunt for their fraternity, reports WTVA.
The Pi Kappa Alpha chapter of the University of Southern Mississippi sent their members on a scavenger hunt, which included a photo of a flamingo. For some reason, Nottis and his friends decided to steal the bird instead of just snapping a shot.
The animal was eventually brought back to the zoo, but returned with life-threatening injuries. Officials ultimately decided to euthanize the female flamingo. Shortly after the bird died, her mate passed away from depression and trauma related to the theft.
Nottis has been suspended from school and is facing grand larceny charges. The Humane Society is offering a reward for any information about the others caught on tape taking part in the incident.
