"I actually like working by myself," he says with a laugh. But what about off-screen? Who is there to keep him warm?
And, on that subject, the often-reticent star is more forthcoming, but only slightly. When it comes to the greatest love of his life, "I haven't met her yet," Clooney, 52, matter-of-factly tells W magazine for its 8th annual Art Issue, on sale as of Dec. 2 (for the cover the Dream Man looks like an Op Art Nightmare in polka dots painted by Yayoi Kusama).
"When I was a kid, I was in love with Audrey Hepburn," Clooney says about the role that got Hepburn her Oscar, as a princess pursued by a newspaper reporter played by Gregory Peck, the George Clooney of his day.
"I watched Roman Holiday when I was 11, and I thought she was as elegant as anything I'd ever seen. And I fell madly in love with her. I also always loved Grace Kelly. I mean, when she comes out of the water in To Catch a Thief, I thought, That's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen."
Kelly's costar on the French Riviera for that one was Cary Grant, the other George Clooney of his day.
As for the one and only Clooney of today, as also revealed in W, after noting that he has to "spend eight months a year in a one-bedroom hotel room in a city I probably wouldn't vacation in, … I get desperately, depressingly homesick if I can't find a way to be near the people that bring joy wherever they go."
To him, "home is humor … and love and responsibility … and I get homesick when the people who know that best and I can't find the time to be together."
