Shailene Woodley may have a more relaxed approach to beauty than the rest of us (see, oh, everything she said in this post, up to and including “be pregnant with the world”), but even she is susceptible to some traditional beauty foibles — like being super-attached to her long hair.

In a just-released video from her August haircut for The Fault in Our Stars (in which she plays a cancer patient), you can watch as the stylist snips through Woodley’s super-thick, super-long ponytail — then see Woodley’s laughing-through-tears reaction as she sees the first chunk of hair to go.

“Let me see it, let me see it,” she says, wincing, as the stylist holds up the pony. Then, covering her face, she says “You guys, I might cry so hard right now!” She avoids looking at her reflection until the final chunk is cut off, but maintains her sense of humor the whole time, eventually posing with all the just-chopped ponytails (“hair nubbins,” as she called them) and making pretend mustaches with them. (She eventually donated the hair to Children With Hair Loss.)

She admitted in a blog post prior to cutting her hair that she felt overly attached to her long hair. “I finally came to the conclusion that hair, for me, was a symbol of strength … For the longest time, I was committed to never chopping it off,” she wrote. “Cut to: now. On Saturday, it will be the shortest it’s ever been. and I feel so relieved, so ready, so dedicated.”

And shortly after the cut, she was a convert. “I love it. It’s so easy, man,” she told PEOPLE. “Not having hair, the lack of hair, even the weight on your head, reveals so much about your body’s chemistry I cannot even tell you.”

Would you cry if you had to cut off all your hair? Have you donated hair before? Tell us in the comments!
