Did Stephen Collins's Wife Use His Confession Tape to Extort Money?

A new statement released by Stephen Collins's divorce attorney purports to say that that the former 7th Heaven actor's estranged wife Faye Grant was out for money when she leaked the tape of his alleged confession to child molestation.

"Over the course of my representation of Stephen in the divorce case, Faye has repeatedly threatened to give this audiotape to the media unless Stephen agreed to pay her millions of dollars more than that to which she was legally entitled," attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan reportedly said in a statement to TMZ on Wednesday.

The statement reportedly continues, "When these demands were rebuffed, Faye attempted – without success – to peddle the tape to numerous different people. It appears that she finally found an audience for this tape – not surprisingly, on the eve of the trial in the divorce case where, again, she is seeking millions of dollars more than that to which she is legally entitled."

Collins and Faye first filed for divorce in May of 2012, after which Faye recorded Collins's alleged confession to inappropriate sexual contact with at least three underage women. Police in both Los Angeles and New York City are investigating the allegations.

As for whether Collins confirms or denies the confession made on the tape, Kaplan reportedly tells TMZ, "The circumstances dictate that we must regrettably refrain from [commenting] at this time."

Collins, who after the news stories emerged was fired from his role in the upcoming comedy Ted 2, was last seen in New York City. Despite claims that a gunshot was heard at his Los Angeles area home Tuesday night, police say it was a false alarm and that he was not on the premises.

Grant's attorneys have not returned requests for comment.
