Where are their super powers when they need them? Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans learned the hard way that they should leave cracking jokes to the pros. The actors issued apologies after making derogatory comments about their ‘Avengers’ co-star, Scarlett Johansson’s character.

Jeremy Renner, 44, and Chris Evans, 33, went too far on April 22, when they made wisecracks about the fictional character Black Widow, who is played by Scarlett Johansson. During the recent interview to promote Avengers: The Age of Ultron, the boys outraged fans after branding the heroine a “slut” – and the offensive language didn’t stop there. After igniting a firestorm of comments from fans, Chris and Jeremy expressed regret about using language that was considered derogatory. Chris explained to MailOnline on April 23: “Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America. We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize.”

In a statement released by Jeremy, he explained: “I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.”

The apologies come after the actors were asked by DigitalSpy how they felt about their characters getting snubbed in the love department by ScarJo’s Black Widow in the sequel. “She’s a slut,” Jeremy, who plays Hawkeye, said. Adding fuel to the fire, Chris, who stars as Captain America, remarked: “I was going to say something along that line. She’s a complete whore.”

Unaware that their humor could be considered sexist, they took a step further and made disability shaming comments. “She’s got a prosthetic leg anyway,” Jeremy quipped, to which Chris chimed in with: “She’s leading everybody on.”

The highly anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron will hit theaters on May 1.
