When New Girl star Max Greenfield learned about his Emmy nomination for best supporting actor in a comedy series, he could not believe it – literally.

"I saw it on the Internet but ... I thought the Internet was lying to me, because I hadn't got a call [from my manager]," he tells PEOPLE.

Instead, the actor, who plays Schmidt on the Fox series, got confirmation when he arrived to the set of his forthcoming movie They Came Together in New York.

"I was walking into hair and makeup, and Paul Rudd turned around and was like 'Hey man, congrats on the Emmy nom,' " says Greenfield, 32, who starred and directed a new Web series for AXE during his hiatus.

Since returning to Los Angeles to begin production on New Girl's second season, Greenfield adds that he and fellow nominee Zooey Deschanel, who earned a best comedic actress nod, have barely been able to concentrate on their lines with all of the Emmy night planning happening.

"The two of us are just, every day, 'What are we going to wear?' 'What shoes are you going to wear?' 'What are you going to wear on top?' 'What are you going to wear on bottom?' 'How are you going to do your hair, makeup, nails?' " he says. "The first episode is going to be a mess. [People are going to be like,] 'What kind of acting is that?' Because we're not present, we're thinking about what we're going to wear."
