Virginia state Sen. Creigh Deeds has been released from the hospital after being treated for stabbing wounds that police say were inflicted by his son, Gus.

"I am alive so must live," Deeds Tweeted on Friday. "Some wounds won't heal. Your prayers and your friendship are important to me."

Deeds was stabbed multiple times in the head and torso by his son during an altercation at the family's Millboro home at around 7 a.m.

Gus Deeds, 24, then shot himself with a rifle and died at the scene, according to police.

The senator's son had been evaluated by mental health professionals on Monday, the day before the attack, under an emergency custody order, but had been released because no psychiatric bed could be located.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell subsequently ordered a review of the state's mental health services.
