Amy Purdy and Derek Hough were declared safe right away and kicked off the night with a 36-out-of-40-point rumba to a slowed down rendition of "Light My Fire" by The Doors.
"You lit my fire! ... First out, first class," head judge Len Goodman told the pair, while Martin gushed, "You were stunning. You made me feel a lot of things."
But the night wasn't entirely a win for Purdy, who was sent to the hospital shortly after her performance with a shoulder injury. She was unable to perform the group dance with her team at the end of the evening, and the dress rehearsal dance was used to judge the routine (more on that later).
James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd were up next and had jaws dropping with a super sexy samba – as promised in her blog. "That was filthy, that was dirty!" Judge Bruno Tonioli told the duo of their 35-point routine, while fellow critic Carrie Ann Inaba raved, "Your chemistry is beyond sick." And while Martin also enjoyed the number, Goodman critiqued its footwork and hip action.
Danica McKellar, who was suffering a broken rib, was up next with partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy. They performed a 33-point salsa that received some critique. Inaba said "the injury stifled the movement," and Goodman said, "It was a little bit careful ... But overall you're injury was difficult. Well done."
When NeNe Leakes and Tony Dovolani took center stage, Martin loved their 31-point Argentine tango. The other judges found the dance entertaining, but critiqued the footwork and technique.
It was an intense Paso doble for Charlie White and Sharna Burgess, who danced next.
"To get a 10 you have to do something spectacular and this wasn't spectacular," Goodman said to the pair's surprise of the 36-point routine, while Tonioli said, "You lost a little bit of steadiness." Inaba also critiqued the dance, but Martin gave it a 10.
Candace Cameron Bure's Argentine tango, for which Inaba recognized her "confidence," also earned her 35 points and praise for her leg work.
Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy danced a mind-blowing complex salsa that surprised Inaba (in a good way) but had Goodman complaining that it was "a little too hectic." It got 39 points, which was the highest couples dance score of the night.
Group Dance
Two group dances closed out the evening. Team Vida was up first. White, Leakes and Maslow, along with their partners performed a very energetic 35-point routine to the sound of Martin. Inaba didn't think the dance was enough in sync. That score will be added to their individual scores.
The remaining partners' Team Loca performed to "Livin La Vida Loca." The dance wowed all of the judges to award the routine 39-points. "That was insane," Inaba raved. "I have never seen a tighter group performance ever!"
The team had well wishes for Purdy, who they missed during the number, but she nailed her dress rehearsal performance and that was taken into account.
"We just hope the best for her and hope she's back soon," Davis said.
Elimination
Unfortunately the lively evening ended with an elimination, and it was Leakes and Dovolani who were sent packing.
"I'm so proud of myself and I hope I've inspired woman all over the world," Leakes said. "I am so proud of myself for standing here competing with Olympians."
Said Dovolani with a laugh: "She had me naked more than anybody else. I gained a friend."
