One former member of the boy band – JC Chasez – is hitting the road this summer in the North American arena tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Jesus Christ Superstar.
Chasez will play Pontius Pilate in the resurrected '70s rock musical, along with Destiny's Child's Michelle Williams as Mary Magdalene, former Sex Pistol "Johnny Rotten" Lydon as King Herod, Incubus's Brandon Boyd as Judas, and Ben Foster, winner of the U.K.'s Superstar competition, as Jesus.
"I'm looking forward to the experience," Chasez told PEOPLE after the 50-date tour was announced on Good Morning America Friday. "This is honestly my first theater experience, so I'm being thrown into the fire of it but I'm excited because of the fact that we are doing something that feels pretty unique."
Chasez told reporters that he had called his former 'NSYNC bandmates to tell them about the gig.
"I think everybody's reaction was identical," he said. "They go, 'That's really happening?' and I go, 'Yeah!' So they were surprised and excited. It's a great idea."
"When were in 'NSYNC we were always looking for how to become larger than life whenever we did our shows," he continued. "We ended up in stadiums because we wanted to go larger. We wanted to push the boundaries and see how far we could go with it."
The tour opens in New Orleans on June 9, and will run through the summer, ending in Philadelphia Aug. 17. And while Chasez is prepping for the show, he's turning to a good friend – Glee's Matthew Morrison – for advice.
"He's done Broadway, and I've worked with him before, so when I got the gig I called him," Chasez said. "The main thing he said was, 'Learn it front to back. Know it, know it, know it, and then let your body take over and let yourself develop into that character.' So that's what I'm hoping to do."
Tickets for the tour go on sale April 11.
