The 42-year-old actor (and Jennifer Aniston's fiancé) has long been spotted dressed as a policeman while filming HBO's mysterious new series The Leftovers in New York City. Now, the trailer is out, and it looks to be the kind of moody, mind-boggling sci-fi show you'd expect from Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof.
Based on the novel by author Tom Perrotta, The Leftovers tells the story of a post-apocalyptic American town coming to terms with a Rapture that wiped away 2 percent of the world's population. The clip immediately tugs at your heartstrings: One of the first to disappear is a harried mother's crying baby. Even as those left behind seem to have accepted their fate and moved on, a group of cultish survivors dressed in white arrive to shake things up – and creep everyone out.
"All the people pretending like it never happened, they're asleep. And they need to wake up now," one character whispers.
The trailer promises violent clashes, sexy encounters and lots of soul-searching. Watch the video below, and see how Theroux and costars Liv Tyler, Chris Zylka and Amy Brenneman deal with the dark drama when The Leftovers premieres June 29 at 10 p.m. (ET) on HBO.
