The Houston cancer researcher, 43, was convicted of aggravated assault on Friday for lacing Dr. George Blumenschein's coffee with ethylene glycerol, a sweet-tasting chemical commonly found in antifreeze. The two worked together at the MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Prosecutors asked the jury to sentence Gonzalez-Angulo to a minimum of 30 years in prison, claiming the case should be treated as a murder trial, according to NBC News.
Blumenschein, 50, did survive the poisoning, but his kidney function has been reduced by 60 percent as a result of the ethylene glycerol.
The doctor believes Gonzalez-Angulo became violent when he chose to break off his affair with her in favor of his longtime girlfriend, Dr. Evette Toney.
Toney testified that the 43-year-old's obsession with her boyfriend started to become especially unsettling in 2012.
"I purchased a watch for George, a Luminox. She purchased the exact same watch for herself," Toney said. "I purchased some luggage for George. She purchased the exact same luggage for herself."
Ultimately, Blumenschein and Toney were satisfied with the outcome of the trial, reports KHOU 11 News .
"At least they can sleep easy for the next 10 years while she's incarcerated," said prosecutor Nathan Hennigan.
"Clearly, we are disappointed with this verdict," added defense attorney Derek Hollingsworth. "She's very emotional. She's very sad. But she's also a tough woman."
The defense plans to file an appeal.
