They've been silent since their split made headlines, but both Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo are now addressing it.

"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened," the American Idol alum Tweeted Friday, appearing to allude her breakup, which multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE this week.

And Sparks, 24, wasn't alone in breaking her silence. When Twin Cities radio personality Big D addressed the breakup reports on air Thursday, the "Talk Dirty" singer was hesitant at first, telling the 101.3 KDWB host, "I'd rather not, man … "

But after trailing off, Derulo, 25, said he and Sparks intend to stay friends. "Yeah, everything is cool," he said, adding the split is "not a bad situation. You know, it's not one of those kind of things."

Still, there seems to be some heartbreak on both ends. Both singers may be channeling their story in the studio. Derulo told Big D he's already working on new music. And on Sept. 15, Sparks Tweeted: "I just wrote the saddest song of my life."

Sparks and Derulo were together for three years.
