The groom wore Armani! For his September 27 wedding to Amal Alamuddin, George Clooney showed loyalty to a label he loves. The actor, 53, selected a custom tuxedo designed by close friend Giorgio Armani, and PEOPLE has the exclusive sketch of his classic black tie look.

So what exactly was Clooney wearing to greet his bride at the top of the aisle? A black tuxedo from Armani’s Made to Measure collection consisting of a ultra-fine wool cashmere blend, paired with a white shirt, black bow tie and oxfords in smooth, brushed black leather. And he pulled it off in his signature dapper style.
“For more than two decades, George has been a dear friend and an honorary Italian,” the designer tells PEOPLE in a statement. “I admire him for his warm personality and strong character, and of course for his great talent as an actor, director and producer. It is a privilege and a pleasure for me to dress him for this occasion, in which he stars in the most important role: that of the groom. I created an all-Italian wardrobe; it’s tailored and refined, without being overdone.”

Clooney and his barrister bride, 36, married in Venice, Italy, in front of their family and friends. The actor, who has worn Armani suits on many red carpets, says it was a natural fit to collaborate with Giorgio once again.
“He’s the class act of all class acts,” Clooney tells PEOPLE of the designer. “He’s been a good friend for many years, and the night wouldn’t be complete without him.” Case in point? To make the tux extra-special for his friend, the Italian designer stitched Clooney’s name inside (see below).

Armani also created four other suits for the groom for other wedding weekend events: three in gray and one in navy blue, with a single-breasted blue coat to top them all. Additionally, several members of the wedding party (including the couple’s fathers, Nick Clooney and Ramzi Alamuddin) wore Armani Made to Measure ensembles in a “two-button tuxedo silhouette with notch lapels in ultra-fine wool/cashmere and flat front trousers with satin details, worn with white shirt, bow tie and classic black brushed leather shoes.”
“When I met George in the ’90s, I immediately took a great liking to him. He is not only brilliant, but also a man with great values,” Armani said. “George is genuinely charismatic and eclectic. One minute he is a prankster who enjoys joking around, while the next an authoritative spokesman for philanthropic initiatives. It will be a great honor to dress him for his next big role … that as a husband.”
