No disrespect to Ben Affleck – but the 2014 Golden Globes were all about Matt Damon.

From the top of the show, Tina Fey sealed Damon's fate as the unofficial mascot when she included him in the opening monologue. Noting the room's overflow of A-list talent, Fey, 43, made him a friendly punchline when she and co-host Amy Poehler pointed out his status in the room full of iconic talent, which included Meryl Streep, Robert Redford and more.

"No offense to the movies and nominees last year but this year is legit!" she said. "There are so many stars in the room tonight, it's hard not to be overwhelmed."

Poehler, 42, chimed in, comparing Damon to the surrounding talent: "You're basically a garbage person."

Cameras panned to Damon, who with his wife Luciana in the audience, laughing at Fey and Poehler.

Next, Damon, took the stage to introduce a trailer for Captain Phillips, referring to himself as "a garbage person", pointing out he'd forgotten his glasses while trying to read the teleprompter.

But it didn't end there for Damon's role as a running joke.

While presenting the Globe for best actor in a TV movie (in which Damon was nominated for his role in Behind the Candelabra), Jimmy Fallon and Melissa McCarthy name dropped the actor in a far-fetched bit. Before announcing the winner, Fallon set the scene, explaining that after having suffered a head injury, McCarthy believe she's Damon.

"Are we here to present the award for best actor in a miniseries or not? Because there are other places I'd like to be, like at home with my beautiful wife, Mrs. Matt Damon!" McCarthy interjected after introducing the nominees.

And although he lost to his costar Michael Douglas, Damon still managed to get a touching shoutout.

"Matt Damon. The bravest, talented actor I've ever worked with and the only reason you're not here is because I had more sequins," Douglas, 69, explained.

One descriptor Douglas left out? A good sport.
