You remember Beyoncé’s Super Bowl halftime show, right? The one where she shut it down? (No, literally. She danced so hard the power went out.)

Her whole look got everyone talking, and while Bruno Mars is certainly a stylish guy in his own right, we have a feeling his beauty isn’t going to be quite as buzzworthy. So in honor of #TBT, we’re revisiting last year’s Super Bowl highlight with the star’s makeup artist, Francesca Tolot.

“Seeing the wardrobe and knowing what she wanted to express, the look I decided to go for had the power and the strength of a rocker look,” she said. “But still, with a touch of glamour and femininity. That was the goal.” She accomplished that with a smudged smoky eye with extra gold sparkle, and a light lip (using NARS “Bettina” lip pencil and MAC clear gloss) so the eyes would be the focus.

Since Beyoncé’s dance moves work up a sweat, we asked Tolot if she had to do anything special to keep everything from melting once Bey started breaking it down. “The rocker look does include also shining and sweating, it’s part of the whole performance,” she said. “No special thing, just apply thicker foundation [she used Chantecaille and L'Oréal Paris True Match Naturale Illuminator mineral foundations] and fix it a little more carefully.”

And was Tolot jamming along with the rest of the stadium or too in the zone to enjoy the night? “It was unbelievable. It was 12 minutes of fireworks and incredible energy. The first time I saw it I wasn’t even looking at the makeup, I was just enjoying her performance,” she said. “And then I rewind it [on my home DVR] and start judging my work and make sure that everything was fine and it looked good.”
