The songwriter, who was nominated this year for writing the music for "Alone Yet Not Alone" from the film of the same name, had his Best Original Song nomination rescinded by the Academy on Wednesday.
The Academy claims that Broughton, who wrote the song with lyricist Dennis Spiegel, acted improperly in his promotion of the song during the nominations voting period.
Broughton, who is a former member of the Academy's Board of Governors and a current member of the Music Branch executive committee, emailed members of the branch to make them aware of his submission.
The board determined that Broughton's actions were inconsistent with the Academy's promotional regulations.
"No matter how well-intentioned the communication, using one's own position … to personally promote one's own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage," said Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
Broughton says he's "devastated" by the move. "I indulged in the simplest, lamest, grass-roots campaign and it went against me when the song started getting attention," he told Variety . "I got taken down by the competition that had months of promotion and advertising behind them."
An additional nominee in the Original Song category will not be named.
The Academy Awards will air live on ABC on Sunday, March 2.
