Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone (Live... by toma-uno
The handwritten lyrics to Bob Dylan's 1965 song sold at Sotheby's auction house in New York on Tuesday to a buyer not likely scrounging for their next meal.
An unidentified bidder bought the working draft of the masterpiece, which was scrawled in pencil on stationary from The Roger Smith hotel in Washington, D.C., for $2.045 million.
The document provides a peek into Dylan's creative process – it includes doodles and crossed-out words. The lyrics "Like a complete unknown" have a line drawn to the name "Al Capone" in the margin, and other details that make the collector's piece unique.
The item is "the only known surviving draft of the final lyrics for this transformative rock anthem," said a statement from Sotheby's reported by the Associated Press.
The auction house is calling the sale a world record for a popular music manuscript. The previous record was set by John Lennon's handwritten lyrics for "A Day in the Life," which sold in 2010 for $1.2 million.
