After last week's episode of True Blood – where a peaceful town barbecue ravaged by an unknown band of diseased vamps left many dead, including Rutina Wesley's formidable character, Tara – the show picks up in the eerie aftermath.
Dazed and confused, citizens gather at the local church, where Mayor Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) instructs them all to go and help clean up the mess the previous day's massacre left behind, while he and the police set out to find the culprits.
Resident mind reader Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) informs the militia about the body of an unknown girl she's found across town, setting her, boyfriend Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello) and the guys on a mission to find out if the corpse will reveal any clues as to where the deadly bloodsuckers originated.
Of course they needn't look too far. Holed up in the nearby vampire club Fangtasia, the murderous vamps sit tight, trying to regroup after taking a beating at the BBQ brawl. With them are a few townspeople they kidnapped to snack on later, including local moms Arlene (Carrie Preston) and Holly (Lauren Bowles). When the two women recognize one weak vamp to be their kids' former teacher, they make a play on her sympathy hoping to be set free.
Meanwhile the spirit of Tara makes a cameo, when her recovering alcoholic mom Lettie Mae (Adina Porter) convinces vampire Willa Burrell (Amelia Rose Blaire) into giving her a taste of blood, sending her on what looks like a spooky acid trip.
And the other surviving citizens on cleanup duty have had enough. Convinced their werewolf mayor and sympathetic sheriff Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer) are in on this vampire takeover, they decide to drop their mops and pick up something a little more powerful – heading over to the police station's gun closet to assert their second amendment right.
That might not be a bad idea considering what Sookie and the guys discover. After tracing the dead girl back to Saint Alice, a nearby town, they find what soon might be Bon Temps's fate – a ghost town with all its citizens piled in one mass grave.
Where's main vamp Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) in all this? Despite showing up in officer Jason Stackhouse's (Ryan Kwanten) steamy daydreams, he's still lost overseas. That is until the final scene when Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten), who's been hot on his tail, finally finds him … surrounded by women of course.
