Could an Oscar be in Channing Tatum's immediate future?

It's very possible based on the buzz for his upcoming film, Foxcatcher. The 22 Jump Street star plays real-life Olympic wrestling champ Mark Schultz, whose gold medalist brother, Dave (played by Mark Ruffalo), was killed in 1996 by his athletic team's sponsor, John Eleuthère du Pont.

Steve Carell is almost unrecognizable as eccentric millionaire du Pont – both he and Tatum, 34, are wearing a lot of prosthetic makeup (which as Oscars history has shown, usually means at least a nomination, if not a win).

Bennett Miller, won the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival for the Foxcatcher, and buzz is building for the tense psychological drama (which is due out Nov. 14) and all three lead actors.

But the heavy subject matter made for a somber time on the set. "It was not a fun experience at all," Tatum told PEOPLE at a luncheon for the film in May. "It was grueling, and it was painful, but it was worth it."

The Magic Mike star also sustained numerous injuries while training for the film with real-life athletes, but the scariest moment might have been when he slammed his head into a mirror, shattering it. Tatum described the experience as the most intense of his career.

"I missed a stud [in the wall] by about two inches," he told PEOPLE. "But the cut [on my head] and the blood were real."

Check out that moment, and his and Carell's transformations, in the trailer.
