The actor is gearing up for his role as Blackbeard in the hotly-anticipated Pan (out July 2015), which required him take a razor to his head. “Blackbeard is born. #PAN,” he captioned the above photo (left) on Instagram. This is a completely different look for the dapper, well-groomed guy that hit the Tonys red carpet Sunday with a swept-back style and neatly-trimmed beard. And we hope he shares more of his transformation (costume photos, please!) on Twitter as filming kicks off.
Aside from getting groomed for his role, the 45-year-old actor, who recovered from skin cancer surgery on his face this year, had to do a lot of training for the fight scenes.
“He’s got a really good work ethic,” New York martial arts champion Jamie Goulding, a fight scene coordinator for the film, told PEOPLE. “He works really, really hard.”
