Jonah Hill was a guest on The Tonight Show Tuesday, and spoke candidly to host Jimmy Fallon about his recent controversy, which involved his being videotaped this past weekend using a homophobic slur against a paparazzo.

Although Hill ostensibly was there to promote 22 Jump Street , he made a heartfelt apology the centerpiece of his interview, saying, "My heart's broken," as his voice trembled.

"If someone says something that hurt you or angers you, use me as an example of what not to do. Don't respond with hatred or anger, because you are just adding more ugliness to the world."

Hill explained that the paparazzo had been following him for some time, and even insulted his family.

It's worth noting that Hill has a history of gay rights activism – he spoke out against Russia for its intolerant laws, and there's a scene in the new Jump Street where his character explains to Channing Tatum's character why homophobic language is offensive.

22 Jump Street hits theaters June 13. You can watch the full interview with Hill below.
