The family has released a photo of the Wisconsin girl, in which she's surrounded by purple heart-shaped cards – it's her favorite color – as she holds up a sign that reads, "Thank You." The image does not show the girl's face in order to protect her identity, but it clearly communicates the family's appreciation to those who have sent letters as well as provided financial support for her medical treatment via the Hearts for Healing Fund.
"Our family would like to thank everyone who has supported our daughter on her miraculous road to recovery," the family said in a statement. "Our little girl has received thousands of purple hearts from numerous countries and from most continents. We simply cannot put into words how grateful we are for the prayers, packages and heartfelt messages. We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support."
The statement added: "Together as a family, we continue to adjust to our 'new normal.' Though many days consist of medical appointments and rehabilitation, recently she and her father enjoyed a 'daddy-daughter night at the movies' and thoroughly enjoyed a Disney film. It also included (after much persistence) a stop for a much-deserved treat in the snack area."
The girl, identified by the initials PL in court documents, was allegedly stabbed May 31 by her friends Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser and left for dead in the woods, following a weekend slumber party.
The two 12-year-old girls told authorities the attack was inspired by Slender Man, a character popular on online horror fiction sites.
