The Lord of the Rings series and the first Hobbit movie had plenty of bad guys. But none, perhaps, compare to the monstrous dragon Smaug – the fire-breathing beast of whom we finally get a glimpse in this trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
Bilbo Baggins, the wizard Gandalf and the thirteen Dwarves might well be popcorn after their encounter with the oversized lizard in the second installment of the Hobbit trilogy – a prequel series that takes place 60 years before Lord of the Rings.
First, though, they must reach the dragon's lair at Lonely Mountain – not an easy feat, as it means potentially lethal encounters with a host of adversaries, including the skin-changer Beorn, a swarm of giant spiders in the Mirkwood Forest and the dangerous Woodland Elves.
Yet, diminutive as they are, Bilbo and his band of brothers keep trudging east on their epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. And of course, there's a third movie still to come, so chances are most of them will survive.
The Desolation of Smaug, starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Orlando Bloom and many others, hits theaters Dec. 13.
