The actor, 28, was held overnight at the Midtown North precinct in New York City, the NYPD tells PEOPLE. He was charged with one count of criminal trespassing and two counts of disorderly conduct after disrupting a Thursday evening performance of the Broadway show Cabaret.
Social media captured some of LaBeouf's disastrous night, including a photo of his arrest on Instagram.
On Twitter, theater reporter Jonathan Mandell supposedly Tweeted that he "saw Shia LaBeouf in handcuffs in tears surrounded by 6 police officers." The Tweet has since been removed.
The Fury actor, who has a history of bizarre behavior, "was quite a mess," one audience member told New York's WABC. "He had a torn shirt, he had a cigarette, he was blending into the crowd, trying to and chasing bums and craziness."
"He just walked up to the bar inside of Cabaret and grabbed a strawberry and fed it to some woman off of her plate," another theatergoer added. "And then tipped the bartender and ran out."
After the outburst, cast member Danny Burstein reportedly wrote on Facebook, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is your places call for Act II. Also, to let you know, Shia LaBeouf has just been escorted from the building in handcuffs. Yep, that just happened." That post also has been removed.
LaBeouf is expected to be arraigned on the charges later today.
