The stars gave us plenty to talk about on the red carpet at Sunday night’s Golden Globes, but there were a few that had us completely divided. And what fun would it be if we didn’t have some spirited debate about the fashion? Julia Roberts had us (and PEOPLE Red Carpet Instagram followers) buzzing the loudest when she stepped out of the limo in Dolce & Gabbana — so we decided to take sides.
PRO: Whitney Little, Associate Producer: My first thought upon seeing Julia step onto the red carpet: “Oh no.” Then I watched as she did her red carpet interviews, and she worked some sort of voodoo magic on me because now I am obsessed with this entire outfit. Hear me out, OK?
Jessica Alba demonstrated how to appropriately rock a white button-up shirt on the red carpet, but nobody ever expected to see it at one of the biggest awards shows of the year. Plus, the black dress perfectly hugged her curves, the sparkly belt added a touch of glam to the ensemble and I personally think the white button-up adds an element of surprise to what could have potentially been a snoozy choice.
Could anyone else have rocked this look? Probably not. But we’re not talking about just anyone — we’re talking about one of the classiest actresses of our time, and if she wants to wear a button-down on the red carpet then I’ll absolutely love it. Thanks for keeping us on our toes, Julia.

CON: Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: I was in a sorority, so I am going to adhere to a strict “PRO-CON-PRO” policy here, in which I am going to sandwich my criticism in compliments to cushion the blow. So let’s start with something nice: Her whole head looks great — fabulous hair and pretty makeup. Nice job there.
As for the dress. It’s very “woman of a certain age,” which Roberts, 46, certainly is not. It makes her look like she needs to conceal her upper arms, which she most certainly does not either. And on a night when her movie is heavily nominated and she’s going to be the center of attention, I’m just not sure “matronly” and “charity ball” is the best look to aim for.
To end on a happy note, she’ll have lots of opportunities to redeem herself throughout awards season. C’mon, Julia, let’s see those guns at the SAGs!
