After not quite three years as a special correspondent for NBC News – and with just a little while until she and husband Marc Mezvinsky are expected to become parents – the former first daughter is now leaving that position, she tells PEOPLE in a statement, "to continue focusing on my work at the Clinton Foundation and as Marc and I look forward to welcoming our first child."
Having specialized in feel-good stories of "remarkable people and organizations making a profound difference," Clinton, 34, says the highlights of her job included meeting people like Annette Dove, whose TOPPS program in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, "continues to fill the hunger, education and safety gaps for kids of all ages in her community."
She also thanks viewers who responded to her stories by helping to fund and expand programs she featured. According to NBC, TOPPS raised $300,000 after Clinton's report.
"Chelsea’s storytelling inspired people across the country and showcased the real power we have as individuals to make a difference in our communities," says Alex Wallace, a senior vice president of NBC News. "While she will be missed, we look forward to working with her in the future."
Clinton, who now holds a PhD. from Oxford, came to NBC with little journalism experience, and her reported $600,000 salary raised eyebrows in the industry. With her last segment airing in January, this year Clinton switched from an annual contract to a month-to-month arrangement with NBC.
The mom-to-be will continue her work at the Clinton Foundation, where she concentrates on improving global and domestic health, advancing the status of women and girls, and creating service opportunities.
Clinton and Mezvinsky have decided to wait on finding out the baby's gender, but are preparing a library and picking books. "They're very happy and excited," says a source.
