"Joan was energetic and boisterous," a source tells PEOPLE about the star's appearance at an event promoting her new book, Diary of a Mad Diva. "She looked amazing [and] was high energy."
Like her usual sharp-tongued self, Rivers, 81, "had everyone laughing, and it didn't stop for an hour," the source adds.
The Fashion Police star was rushed to The Mount Sinai Hospital on Thursday after complications occurred during a throat procedure on her vocal cords.
Her daughter, Melissa Rivers, is currently en route to the hospital, where her mother was reportedly placed in a medically induced coma earlier today after being upgraded from critical to stable condition.
"Her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support," the hospital's spokesman Sid Dinsay said in a statement.
