Angelina Jolie‘s wedding gown was many things, but it certainly wasn’t predictable. When looking for the perfect dress in which to wed Brad Pitt, 50, at their home in France Saturday, the actress, 39, knew exactly who to turn to: Atelier Versace’s master tailor Luigi Massi — with a little extra help from her six children. Massi, a longtime friend of the bride, created a white silk satin gown which looks ever so traditional from the front, with its fitted bodice and flowing skirt — but the back tells a very different story.
Hand-stitched with dozens of drawings, the gown and complementary veil show off the creative talents of Jolie and groom Brad Pitt’s six children: Maddox, 13, Pax, 10, Zahara, 9, Shiloh, 8, and 6-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox.
Partnering with Massi — who also designed Jolie’s 2012 Oscar gown, featuring the now-iconic thigh-high slit — the actress devised the idea of incorporating her children’s artwork into the look. (And quite possibly pioneering the first known example of haute couture-meets-fridge art … refrigerature?)
“Luigi is like family to me and I couldn’t imagine anyone else making this dress,” she tells PEOPLE in this week’s exclusive cover story, which showcases photos of the dress, the intimate ceremony and the entire family’s celebration. “He knows and cares for the children, and it was great fun putting it together.”
For Massi, the opportunity to incorporate the work of the family’s young artists was particularly meaningful. “I have watched the children grow up and I loved creating with their drawings,” the Italian designer tells PEOPLE. “I was honored to be asked to make the dress.
