Amal Alamuddin told PEOPLE that her wedding gown designer, Oscar de la Renta, is “such an elegant designer and such an elegant man.” And she had plenty of time to discover that for herself. The lawyer and brand-new Mrs. George Clooney, 36, made multiple trips to the designer’s N.Y.C. atelier to be fitted for her custom lace ballgown — culminating in the final fitting, which was captured by Vogue.

“George and I wanted a wedding that was romantic and elegant, and I can’t imagine anyone more able than Oscar to capture this mood in a dress,” Alamuddin says in the Vogue profile of her fitting. “Meeting him made the design process all the more magical, as he is so warm and such a gentleman.”
He also gives excellent advice: In the story, it’s revealed that (after consulting with Alamuddin on favorite silhouettes and looks), he steered her towards the finished result: an off-the-shoulder ivory tulle confection with a long train, covered in 14 yards of Chantilly lace appliqué and a hand-embellished finish. (The long veil also featured some of the same lace-and-beading details.)

De la Renta’s head tailor, Raffaele Ilardo, was also on hand for the fitting, and Alamuddin conversed with him about the details of the dress in French after Ilardo told her the unfinished neckline was meant to be “un peu impur.” She also spoke to her mother, Baria (on hand, along with sister Tala, for the final fitting) in Arabic before trying on her Oscar de la Renta dress, a silver beaded mini from his Fall 2014 collection, meant to be worn for the dancing at the reception. And about this, the elegant, 82-year-old designer says (in English), “You look hot!” No wonder Alamuddin says “he is the man every woman wants to hug.”
