One day after her husband Ray Rice lost his job with the NFL, his wife Janay Rice – formerly Janay Palmer – spoke out on social media Tuesday to defend her husband and blame the media for its reporting on a domestic assault incident involving the couple.

"I woke up this morning feeling like I had a horrible nightmare, feeling like I'm mourning the death of my closest friend," Rice write on her private Instagram account, according to the the Baltimore Sun , which verified the account. "But to have to accept the fact that it's a reality is a nightmare in itself."

"No one knows the pain that media & unwanted [opinions] from the public has caused my family. To make us relive a moment in our lives that we regret every day is a horrible thing. To take something away from the man I love that he has worked his ass [off] for all his life just to gain ratings is horrific," she continued in the post.

"THIS IS OUR LIFE! What don't you all get. If your intentions were to hurt us, embarrass us, make us feel alone, take all happiness away, you've succeeded on so many levels. Just know we will continue to grow & show the world what real love is! Ravensnation we love you!"

The Baltimore Ravens acted on Monday to terminate Rice's contract with the team, on the same day that a video surfaced showing Rice apparently punching his then-fiancée unconscious in an Atlantic City hotel elevator on Feb. 15. An earlier video, which showed Rice dragging the apparently unconscious Palmer out of the elevator, had resulted in a two-game league suspension for the athlete, prompting critics to say the punishment at that time did not go far enough.

Last month, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told the league's 32 teams that he "didn't get it right," and imposed a stronger personal conduct policy regarding domestic violence or sexual assault that would suspend players without pay for six games for a first offense, and banishment from the league for a second offense.

Rice himself has not yet addressed his firing.
