Van der Sloot, 27, is serving a 28-year sentence for murdering Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old Peruvian business student, in 2010. He also remains the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway.
Last month, the Dutch native was transferred to Challapalca Maximum Security Prison – a remote facility located in the Andes mountains at 15,700 feet and near the Bolivian border – after allegedly threatening to kill a prison guard.
Last week, he went on a hunger strike to protest conditions at the prison, reports NBC News.
The new 46-second clip begins with a close-up of van der Sloot, who sports facial hair and a mohawk-style haircut, leaning back and talking slowly.
"I am making this video for my own security," he says in the translation. "Because the director gave me this phone. I don't know why."
Later, the video shows someone at the prison taking his blood pressure and then frisking him and other inmates as they face the wall with their arms up.
The video comes just before van der Sloot is due to become a father. He married Leidy Figueroa in a prison ceremony in July, and she is due to give birth to their child later this month.
In March, the Peruvian government also announced van der Sloot will be allowed to face charges in the U.S. for extorting $25,000 from Holloway's mother, Beth, in exchange for false information about the location of Natalee's body.
However, he will not face charges until after his current murder sentence is complete – in 2038, at least.
