Kate Hudson has been engaged to rocker Matthew Bellamy for more than three years, but the long wait doesn't bother her.

"Were working, it's a long engagement. I think the best part is that knowing you're working towards the idea of a commitment that is hopefully as long of a stretch as you can pull it – and forever seems beautiful," the actress, 35, tells Women's Health .

"My parents aren't married," she says of mom Goldie Hawn and her longtime love, Kurt Russell. "And one of the reasons why they never got married is because they had been married before and they liked it the way it was. They didn't feel like they needed a piece of paper to be committed. So for me, I know that marriage is not a golden ticket."

One of the challenges Hudson and Bellamy face is distance. But the pair is making it work by seeing one another at least every two weeks.

"And we travel together ... we are lucky to not have to do the real long distance thing. To me, I think when women who have children are fighting overseas, that's long distance. And that's very challenging. I really honor those families that do that."

And the couple makes sure to find some alone time when they do see one another.

"We do our date nights," she says. "From a movie, to dinner, to just not leaving our bed, to concerts. We like our dates."

The October issue of Women's Health is on newsstands now.
