Beyoncé as Rosie the Riveter: Is this the most feminist picture in the history of feminism or pictures?
Most of the Internet seems to think so, but there's at least one dissenting opinion.
Bey posted the pic on her Instagram Tuesday, and it garnered 300,000 likes within a half-hour; it's currently got over 1.15 million. Beyoncé, a self-described feminist, is definitely a fit for a modern update of Rosie, but amid the dozens of online outlets that have covered the pic, there's one publication that disagrees about the appropriateness of Rosie in general.
"Sorry, Beyoncé, Rosie the Riveter is no feminist icon," reads The Guardian's headline for their writeup of the image.
"[Rosie] … was designed by a man, J. Howard Miller, who took inspiration from tired, oil-covered workers but washed them down and dolled them up to produce his Rosie," writes Rebecca Wilson. "Miller never intended his creation to be a symbol of female empowerment – she was used to encourage women to take up jobs in factories as part of [its] patriotic duty to the war effort."
"When we dress up as her, we're dressing up as an airbrushed fib," Wilson concludes.
