Instead of get-well cards, the 12-year-old Wisconsin girl who was stabbed 19 times at the end of May asked for purple hearts.

A few weeks ago, the girl received the ultimate heart-shaped symbol of courage – a U.S. military Purple Heart.

"Our little girl has received thousands of purple hearts from numerous countries and from every state in the United States," says her family in a statement. "Recently, she received a very heartfelt and special gift – a military Purple Heart, given anonymously. With it was a card that read, 'The Only Heart I Could Find – Be Strong.' "

The girl, who has remained unidentified in order to protect her privacy, has been recuperating at her Waukesha, Wisconsin, home since she was stabbed on May 31, after a sleepover at her friend's house.

Morgan Geyser and Anisa Weier, both 12, told officials they stabbed their friend as an homage to Slender Man, an online fictional character.

While Geyser and Weier continue to attend court hearings, the survivor is recovering with the help of purple hearts and donations. Supporters have donated more than $50,000 to help the family with mounting medical expenses.

For now, the family hopes to personally thank whoever donated the Purple Heart medal. Upon hearing the news, the Wisconsin Secretary of Veteran Affairs, John Scocos, released a statement.

"It does not surprise me that a decorated veteran unselfishly gave this amazingly brave and courageous little something from his or her heart."
