"I wish everybody was so easy. He gets it. He's mechanically inclined," Brad Hunter, the director of business development for the iWalk crutch tells PEOPLE.
"He's a tough guy. He was in very good spirits – he was alert and very sharp," Hunter says. "He wants his independence."
The actor, 71, stepped out in London recently sporting the peg-leg-looking device that is helping him to recover from his broken leg.
"When you use normal crutches, you're passive in your recovery, and you're not using your leg, so you're atrophying from day one. With this, you're not. So it's a very active way to do recovery," Hunter says of the FDA-registered, hands-free device.
Hunter spoke with Ford on the phone to coach him on how to use the crutch, but says the actor didn't need to wait for instruction.
"We're walking him through it and were like, 'Before you take your first step, here's some tips.' And he's like, 'Too late, I'm already doing it,' and was walking around the room with the cellphone," Hunter says. "This was like a day or two after his surgery, so he's still got a lot of pain."
As for how long Ford will be out of commission, "I don't know for sure, but I think he said about a month," Hunter says.
