What a difference a year makes.

When Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered last fall, the Marvel Universe had yet to be rocked by the fact that the secret agency had been infiltrated by spies – a shocker not revealed until the blockbuster movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier in April. But the ramifications of that infiltration have altered the course of the Joss Whedon-created ABC drama.

And now, new art heralding the show's second season provides fans with some fresh insight into the new reality facing the agents now that their world has been turned upside down.

1. There's a new agent in town.

Newly appointed director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), has his rightful place at the point of his team's V formation, but if you are having a hard time identifying the agent on the far left, don't worry, you haven't forgotten a member of the team. Actor Nick Blood has joined the cast as Lance Hunter, described by ABC as "a dashing mercenary sharp shooter with a quick wit." But can the agents trust him completely?

2. S.H.I.E.L.D. still has their back turned to Agent Ward.

At the end of season 1, it was discovered that Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) was a Hyrda mole, and as Dalton's position at the far right of the image indicates, he begins season 2 still locked away from his former teammates.

3. Agents Fitz and Simmons are alive and (sort of) well.

Agents Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) had been left for dead in the middle of the ocean by Agent Ward, but, as their appearance in the new art implies, they are still going to be part of the show. But are they still agents? Fitz remains in a coma and "may never regain his full cognitive functions," according to ABC.

The new season of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres Tuesday, Sept. 23 (9 p.m. ET).
