Joan Rivers didn't hold back in her comedy, joking at times about President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

But that didn't prevent the commander in chief from appreciating her humor, which he noted in a handwritten letter of condolence sent to Rivers's daughter, Melissa.

"I received a letter from the White House, from President Obama, someone who was often a target of her jokes, as was Mrs. Obama, but I received a handwritten note saying, 'Not only did she make us laugh, she made us think,' " Melissa told her Fashion Police costars, Kelly Osbourne, George Kotsiopoulos and Giuliana Rancic in an episode to honor her mother, who died Sept. 4.

"She affected so many people, and people you would never expect to have humor," Rivers says in a clip of the show set to air Saturday. "I think that's one of the things that people now are realizing. It wasn't just the funny. She made us think."

Rivers also spoke about the love she has experienced before and since the star-studded funeral she organized befitting her mother's over-the-top wishes and colorful life.

Osbourne told Rivers that the iconic comedian did much more than make people laugh, but opened doors for her and others to be their authentic selves.

"If it wasn't for your mother, I wouldn't be able to be me," Osbourne said. "My mother wouldn't be able to her. And outspoken, independent women wouldn't be who they are if it wasn't for women like Joan paving the way."
